La MEMANTINA reduce la acción de elementos químicos en el cerebro que podrían contribuir a los síntomas del Alzheimer.
La memantina se utiliza para tratar demencias de moderadas a severas del tipo Alzheimer.
No utilice la memantina si es alérgico a este componente.
Antes de usar memantina, informe a su médico si es alérgico a algún medicamento o si tiene:

- ranitidina (Zantac);
- quinidina (Cardioquin, Quinadex, Quinaglute);
- bicarbonato de sodio (Alka-Seltzer, remedio casero de bicarbonato de sodio);
- Los medicamentos antivirales como la amantadina (Symmetrel) y rimantadina (Flumadine);
- medicinas para el resfriado o la tos que contienen dextrometorfano;
- un diurético (píldora de agua) como hidroclorotiazida (HCTZ, HydroDiuril, Hyzaar, Lopressor, Vasoretic, Zestoretic) o triamtereno (Dyrenium, Maxzide, Dyazide);
- medicamentos para tratar el glaucoma, tales como acetazolamida (Diamox), diclorfenamida (Daranide) o metazolamida (Neptazane, MZM, Glauctabs), o
- una medicina oral para la diabetes que contiene metformina (como Fortamet, Glucophage, Actoplus Met, Avanda met, Metaglip, Glucovance).
¿Qué efectos secundarios podría notar cuando tome esta medicina?
Consiga ayuda médica urgente si tiene algún signo de reacción alérgica a la memantina como: urticaria, dificultad al respirar, hinchazón del rostro, labios, lengua o garganta.
Deje de utilizar Memantina y llame a su médico si ha experimentado en algún momento estos efectos secundarios serios:
- tos, tensión en el pecho, fiebre o problemas al respirar;
- dolor en el pecho, ritmo cardiaco rápido;
- confusión, alucinaciones;
- cansancio o adormecimiento repentino, especialmente en una parte del cuerpo;
- falta de coordinación;
- desmayos o convulsiones;
- menor orina de la habitual o nada en absoluto;
- piel pálida, facilidad al sangrar o al hacerse moratones, debilidad inusual o
- presión sanguínea elevada.
Los efectos secundarios leves podrían incluir:
- náuseas, vómitos, diarrea, estreñimiento, falta de apetito;
- mareos, sensación de cansancio;
- pérdida de peso;
- sudor en las manos y pies;
- ritmo cardiaco rápido;
- facilidad al sangrar o al hacerse moratones, debilidad inusual;
- dolor en las articulaciones;
- ansiedad, agresión;
- erupciones en la piel;
- enrojecimiento o hinchazón alrededor de los ojos; u
- orinar más de lo habitual.
